SEO Keyword Tools: Google Keyword Tool

Google recently removed the link on the new Google Keyword Tool to the “previous interface,” forcing marketers to actually use the new tool.

Initial impressions of the new tool have varied. Here at World Synergy, we miss the old tool! It seems that the new tool offers too many keyword suggestions, offering hundreds of irrelevant keywords to put into programs. Be very careful to review each keyword, as you may be surprised to find phrases having nothing or little to do with the words you entered.

Search Engine Watch published an article, 5 Reasons Google’s New Keyword Tool is Better, highlighting new features of the new tool including:

Online Marketing Keywords – SEO battle with Journalists

Journalists seem to think SEOers are overtaking the newsroom and turning traditional reporting to optimization overload.

Recently, Nikki Usher posted a blog about how journalists really feel about incorporating SEO keywords in their articles.

“We are told to put SEO-powered words in our headlines, which I understand, even though it takes the life out of our heads,” said a reporter from the Washington Post. “But every now and then, we have also been told to get these SEO-charged words into our first sentence or lede of a story. Wonder why a lede suddenly sounds robotic? This is why.”

Every newsroom has a different perspective on SEO optimization, but in the end, SEO keywords and tactics shouldn’t be frowned upon by journalists.

A strong SEO strategy needs to be communicated properly to the newsroom. If you want relevant traffic and people to actually read your stuff, SEO needs to be incorporated. It not only can help increase your viewers, but it can help journalists track what topics their readers are more interested in reading.

News publications fight to be ranked high on search engines, but in order to be ranked high you need to understand the concept of search engine optimization and how it works. No understanding, no ranking!

My best advice is to “roll with the punches” and instead of complaining about SEO, figure out how you can use it to your advantage.

SEO Marketing Tools — Google Fixes Keyword Tool Accuracy

Marketers may need to double check search counts for exact phrases after Google updated and fixed the accuracy of search counts on the Google Keyword Tool. This tool is used to estimate the number of monthly global and local searches for keyword phrases.

Search Engine Watch reported that Google, in some cases, was overestimating the search traffic for exact match phrases. For example, Search Engine Watch shows that the local monthly searches for [golf clubs] dropped from 165,000 before the Google update to 33,100 after the update.

Marketers should recheck any exact phrases they are using in their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) programs.  It’s a good idea to double check any broad or phrase match keywords as well to make sure you are targeting the best keywords for your campaign.

This could also explain why a phrase that was ranking high on Google wasn’t bringing in the expected traffic. In the golf clubs example, that’s a drop of 80 percent less searches, and thus less potential traffic.

Marketers may need to rethink their SEO strategies if they were aggressively going after a phrase that has far fewer searches than originally believed. It’s a good idea to continually revisit your keywords to find the best phrases that will deliver traffic and customers effectively to your site. Also, use the SEO marketing tools that are available online to help with your keyword research.

Searching for New Online Marketing Keywords

Optimize! Optimize! Optimize!

The ambiguous world of SEO can be confusing and mind boggling. There are endless search engine marketing services and SEO keyword tools available on the Web, so many it can put someone in a daze.

Here are a few simple steps any online marketer can tackle on their own.

  1. Check what keywords are ranking.
    - If a keyword is ranking high, leave the page and keyword alone
  2. Under the Content tab in Google Analytics, research what keywords users are searching for and on what pages.
  3. Compare the keywords found in Google Analytics with the Google Keyword Tool
    - Check how many people are using the term in phrase match)
  4. Then check out the keywords from WEB CEO to evaluate if you can use a high ranking keyword with the new researched keyword.
    - This will help support the new keyword
  5. Be sure to only test the new keywords on pages that have already been indexed on Google.
    - You can check if a page has been cached by simply typing “site: Website URL” into Google search engine
  6. Another tip when researching for new keywords is to look at the URL

Over a couple of weeks to a month, watch how your new keywords rank. Be sure to inventory what keywords you’ve tested and their rankings.
